The Different Names of Whiteboard Animation – And one thing they all share!

The

Sure, sure — everyone knows what “Whiteboard Animation” is, but did you know there are many more names for it in the industry? In the interest of keeping you on your terminology toes, here are 5 different names and great examples of videos you can whip out at the next trivia night!

This is a pretty well known one, mainly because it comes from the Do-It-Yourself software, VideoScribe. Practically anyone interested in making explainer videos has heard of this, and it is a good tool for smaller operations or those who don’t have the means to hire an actual studio to hand draw videos. Most VideoScribe’d animations can be done as a solo-operation and turn out anywhere from mediocre to pretty professional looking. One notable downside is the pretty steep learning curve of the software, which can be off-putting to some.

A telltale sign of something made with VideoScribe is the artist’s hand will stay in the same anatomic position throughout the video. Check out the differences between these two for a better idea of what I’m talking about and let me know in the comments if you can spot which one is the VideoScribe’d video!

Telescribing is more of the technical term for real time drawing of a scripted video. It’s pretty well known, and most people will know what you’re talking about if you ask about it. You can think of telescribing almost as visual subtitles!

This is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Calling a white board video an Illustrated Story might not be the most common thing in the world… but Mashable’s using it… so there’s that.

Practically everyone knows Whiteboard Animation. It’s the industry standard name and also what our competitors call their videos. It’s popular because it essentially self describes what it does – animation, on a whiteboard.

When we got into the Whiteboard Animation game in 2010, very few people were creating customized non-template based videos with original artwork. We thought about what to call it when a team of artists actually draws a unique message in front of a high-speed camera and settled on the term “FastDraw” (as you might be able to guess, from the name of the company!). If you’re ever in our studio listening to the artists talk about a video in mid-production, we call it a FastDraw. Sure, it’s a bit different than what the rest of the industry calls it, but we’re ok with that. We think our Fast Draw videos are a bit different too.

So at the end of the day, what’s the point of a whiteboard animation/illustrated story/videoscribe? It’s to communicate a message!
Whiteboard Animation ScriptAny good example of these will have one thing in common – an interesting story! You can communicate any message anyway you want, but if it’s boring, nobody will care. So call whiteboard animation anything you want, but when you go make one,be SURE to be EXCITING!
